HERO
An ordinary person facing extraordinary circumstances and acting
with courage, honor and self-sacrifice.
Not too long into my crossfit journey I learned about a workout called "Murph". It was a one mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and then a second mile run. I fell in love with the WOD because it was simple and I didn't need any fancy equipment to do it. All I needed was my body and pull-up bar. At the bottom of the description I saw that it said "If you have a 20 pound vest, wear it." Well, I made that my goal! I wanted one day to do Murph with a 20 pound vest! It meant something to me and I wasn't sure why...
Fast forward a couple of months when I learned that "Murph" was a workout honoring Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, NY, who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005. I learned that this workout was one of Mike's favorites and he'd named it 'Body Armor.'
I fell in love with the idea of doing a workout to honor someone else. I love to workout but doing it for someone made it that much more meaningful and I knew it would make me push more as I thought about that person when I felt I was "suffering."
I then learned that there were many, many more WODs honoring people and at one time I had decided to do them all. There are now so many that that is near impossible but I will continue to work through all I can.
SO, this is my journey through as many Hero WODs, named WODs and girl named WODs that I know of. I am truly honored to do them and grateful that I am able to physically and mentally challenge myself in the way that I can. Thank you for following my journey and I would love to know if you do some of these yourself and how you do!
With great love... Juliet
