**************************************

I used the first run as a warm-up. That took 12:50.

The middle part was pretty smooth but running with a med ball is just tough. I walked several times and just kept moving the ball around from under my arms to up on top of my shoulders. That part took 18:44 - Lol!

Grateful to honor this man.

SFC Matthew Ryan Kahler, 29, of Granite Falls, Minnesota died on January 26, 2008, in Forward Operating Base Fenty, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained from small arms fire in Waygul, Afghanistan. Possible friendly fire. Afghan guard (ally) possibly mistook soldier as an enemy combatant and engaged with small arms fire. The incident is under investigation.

Kahler was born on July 24, 1978. He was a 1997 graduate of Yellow Medicine East High School. He had decided to join the military at the age of ten, taking his father’s advice joining the Special Forces. He leaves behind wife, Vicki, and a 4-year-old daughter. The family had been stationed in Vicenza, Italy, for about eight years, his father said.

Ron Kahler said he advised his son to join the Special Forces when Matthew Kahler joined the Army the summer of his junior year at Yellow Medicine East High School. Special Forces would teach Matthew how to survive, his father believed.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

This Hero WOD was submitted to us by Samuel Lowe of CrossFit Aestus (North Carolina, USA). It was their workout of the day for January 26, 2018. The significance of the movement repetitions represents his birthday, date of passing and the number of his combat team.

From Sam: “Two of our members were in the 173d Airborne and the requested that I write this [workout] in SFC Matthew Kahler’s memory. They are Joel and Rachael Fehl (Schenk). Matthew was Joel’s best friend. Joel was not deployed with SFC Kahler at the time the he was KIA. Joel spoke of the altitude of the areas that the 173d was deployed in Afghanistan. I wrote in movements that would tax breathing and legs. We will always perform this WOD on January 26.”
