This was a great workout and I actually remember doing the version without the runs in 2018. I actually appreciated the runs because they were a bit of a shake out.

All push-ups I did 10/10/5

Lunges, sit-ups and squats steady and unbroken. Legs weren't quite ready to run after the squats though!

Honored.

Background: This hero WOD is the original version of the “Zachary Tellier” workout honoring U.S. Sgt. Zachary D. Tellier – a combat infantryman who died on Sept. 29, 2007 in Afghanistan.

CrossFit DC @crossfitdc (Washington D.C., USA), whose coaches were friends of Tellier, first mentioned his passing on their website on October 4, 2007. The gym later posted a shortened version of this workout – without the Shuttle Runs (due to the time constraints of running a group class). After WODwell posted the no-run version of the workout in 2018 it became one of the most well-known bodyweight hero WODs.

According to Coach Tom Brose @theclevostyle, owner/founder of CrossFit DC and friend of Tellier’s who played rugby with him, the version with the runs was the first form of the workout. So in 2022, on the week of the 14th anniversary of Tellier’s passing, WODwell posted this “original” version of the workout, which includes out-and-back Shuttle Runs after each block of work.

Brose described that the runs are meaningful: “Zach wasn’t a lifter but…was really proud of his running times. The shuttles are what we did in Rugby practice. Zach [and Tom both] played at American University.”
