Army Spc. Allen J. Vandayburg, 20, of Mansfield, Ohio; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Vilseck, Germany; killed April 9 when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle in Barez, Iraq. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Nadeau presented the family with his Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
A.J. was preceded in death by his grandparents, E.E. and Ethel Vandayburg and Laura Vandayburg. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, PFC Christopher J. Vandayburg, USMC of Quantico, Va. (who will escort his brother's remains); one sister, Taylor N. Vandayburg of Mansfield; grandparents, Tracy Holbrook of Olive Hill, Ky., and Virgie Barker of Crestline, Ohio; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins in Olive Hill and Mansfield.
