The Fit

For Time: Finished in 21:50

  • 43 Barbell Complexes* (50/35 kg)

  • *Each Barbell Complex consists of:

  • 1 Deadlift, 1 Clean, 1 Thruster, 1 Jerk, 1 Overhead Squat

  • Time Cap: 25 minutes

**Each complex must be completed unbroken, without dropping or letting go of the bar. A broken complex must be started over from the beginning.

It took me a while to figure out how to do this complex! The first couple times my hands were too narrow for me to overhead squat so I had to move them out, but not TOO far because then I couldn't clean or do a thruster! Once I figured it out though, it was really fun. Sets of 3 were all I could pull off with shoulder fatigue. Blessed to honor this little one...

This Memorial workout is dedicated to 4-year old Liam who passed away on May 16, 2018, from refractory epilepsy. Liam (whose name means 'a strong-willed warrior') had his first epileptic seizure at 18 months old. Shortly thereafter he was medically diagnosed with refractory epilepsy, also known as drug-resistant epilepsy. On average Liam suffered 10-40 seizures per day. On a good day, around 5 seizures, but on a bad day, up to 100+. By the age of 2 years old, he lost the ability to sit, stand, walk, and talk. By 3 years old, he lost the ability to eat, where a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy or PEG tube was inserted into his stomach in order for him to eat. He was hospitalized every other month because of his uncontrollable seizures. Various times he was hospitalized for 3 months at a time where his parents lived in hospitals and guesthouses. Liam's Pediatric Neurologist lived in Cape Town so they had to fly to Cape Town each time for him to be hospitalized, most times were by Emergency Air Transfers. Due to Liam's specific condition and the cost of transport to specialized facilities, his medical costs were substantial, which is what prompted Ruhan, owner and head coach of CrossFit Nelspruit, @crossfitnelspruit(Nelspruit, South Africa) to contact Liam's parents (who are both CrossFit athletes) to find out if he could contribute. In solidarity with Liam, Ruhan created the Memorial WOD "The Fit" as a fundraiser, using Liam's severe seizure count as inspiration for the workout. In a conversation with WODwell, Ruhan told us "the 43 reps signify the time when that was the worst number of seizures they had. The bar work was decided on the fact that he had short hard fits and for that was what they wanted to be simulated."
